Zone Fam Are Back: Zambia’s Hip-Hop Group Reunites After 12 Years
If ‘Contolola’ or ‘Shaka Zulu On Em’ still takes you straight back to the early 2010s, there is good news: Zone Fam are back. After more than a decade without a group release, Jay Rox, Sam Sakala, Yung Verbal and Tim have reunited for ‘One Fight’, released on 4 September 2026. For long-time fans, it is the return of one of the groups that helped give Zambian hip-hop a bigger continental presence. For younger listeners, it may be an introduction to a name they have heard older siblings and cousins talk about for years.
How Zone Fam Became One of Zambia’s Biggest Hip-Hop Groups
Zone Fam’s story started long before the awards and big videos. The members began as solo artists around Zone Studios in Chainama, Lusaka, where a shared interest in hip-hop gradually turned into a group. By 2009, Zone Fam had developed into the four-man line-up many fans remember: Jay Rox, Dope G, now Sam Sakala, Yung Verbal and Thugga, now known as Tim.
Their timing was important. Zambian hip-hop was growing, but English-language rap still had to fight for mainstream space. Zone Fam managed to sound international without hiding where they came from. Their music moved between English, Nyanja and other African languages, while songs such as ‘Shaka Zulu On Em’, ‘Chikali’, ‘Translate’ and ‘Contolola’ built a following at home and outside Zambia.
By 2013, the group had reached one of its biggest career moments. ‘Contolola’ won Most Gifted Duo, Group or Featuring Video at the Channel O Africa Music Video Awards in South Africa. A year later, Zone Fam were promoting ‘Two Things’ as part of a planned second album called Barcode. At the time, there was little indication that ‘Two Things’ would become their last group single for more than a decade.
Then things changed.
Why Did Zone Fam Separate?
In April 2015, Tim announced that he was leaving Zone Fam to pursue a more Christian direction in his music. The announcement did not read like the end of a friendship. Tim described the other members as brothers, while the remaining members said they intended to continue as a three-man group. Barcode was still being spoken about as a future release.
But the album never arrived, and Zone Fam slowly disappeared as an active group.
For years, fans filled that silence with their own theories. Was there a fight? Had solo ambitions taken over? Did one member become bigger than the group? The public statements that have emerged since then suggest a less dramatic, but very real, explanation.
Speaking in a 2025 interview, Jay Rox said Zone Fam had been putting significant resources into the music while seeing too little financial return to sustain the group. In other words, success did not automatically mean a profitable music business. Rather than describing the end as a bitter break-up, he presented it as a point where the members had to consider their individual futures.
That explanation also fits with comments Sam Sakala made as early as 2016. When asked about the relationship between the members as their individual careers developed, he described them as brothers and said another member’s success was something to support, rather than compete against.
What Happened to Jay Rox, Sam Sakala, Yung Verbal and Tim?
Those individual futures turned out to be busy.
Jay Rox continued recording and producing, building an extensive solo catalogue and becoming CEO of Headphone Music. Sam Sakala expanded his career beyond rap into acting and television, while continuing to make music and gradually moving away from being known only as Dope G.
Yung Verbal developed a strong presence in media and now hosts PodHouse Conversations, a long-form interview platform centred on African music, culture and creative careers. Tim continued making music under his own name and released his 21-track debut album, Sonder, in 2023.
Their separate careers may actually be what makes this reunion more interesting. They are not returning as the same young men who made ‘Shaka Zulu On Em’. Each member now brings more than a decade of experience from different parts of the creative industry.
Zone Fam Return With ‘One Fight’
That brings us to ‘One Fight’.
The new single, released through Headphone Music and produced by Jay Rox, brings all four members together again. Its music video was directed by Lanzee Cooper. In announcing the reunion, Zone Fam described the song as the beginning of a new chapter and an opportunity to reconnect with long-time supporters while reaching listeners who were too young to experience the group at its peak.
There is also something fitting about the title. For a group whose ending was surrounded by questions, ‘One Fight’ arrives with a message of unity rather than explanation. It does not pretend that 12 years have not passed. Instead, the reunion gives the four artists a chance to see what Zone Fam can sound like now.
What Is Next for Zone Fam?
What happens next is still unclear. There has been no confirmed announcement of a new album or tour, and there is no word yet on whether the long-unreleased Barcode project will ever resurface.
For now, one thing is certain: Zone Fam are making music together again. That alone is enough to make Zambian hip-hop fans pay attention.
